BOOK III · VOLUME 1 · LUC ARDEN
The Way to Liberty — Volume 1: Human
Volume 1 of The Way to Liberty starts with the person before it turns to technology or institutions. Luc Arden asks what principles might support dignity, personal freedom, family life and the protection of the vulnerable in an imagined society.
A READER’S GUIDE
What the Human volume contains
Its fifteen thematic sections consider freedom of speech and conscience, privacy, medical information, religion, family support, children and older people. The book also raises the difficult question of how different rights can coexist when they come into conflict.
Among the numbered articles are the Citizen Share and protections for children. Rather than presenting only a broad ideal, Arden attempts to imagine particular rules and the situations in which they would matter.
Together, the three volumes of Book III form a fictional social thought experiment. This first volume establishes the human perspective: before deciding what institutions or machines may do, the reader is asked whom those systems are meant to serve.
The numbered proposals of The Way to Liberty belong to the fictional world of Libertalia; they are not legislation in force.
